ladies & gentlemen, we are in outer SPACE.

here's a flier that i did.
kinda rocks the retro/japanimation vibe.
i like it. hope you do, too.

ciao for now,
ronnie.

ps : if you're in the area--GO TO THE SHOW! :)

I warn you. I get very bored at my job. Though I do 93% of the work in my three person office (I did the math), I still find that the majority of my time is spent on myspace and ebay.

And finding new ways to embarrassingly promote the band.

witness that above.

and this piece of work you might recognize:

let's just say that it's a good thing I have other talents, or I would be fired for even posting that on the interwebs.

on the plus side today I get to look forward to practicing the drums with a brand new (and my first, I might add) tattoo. Scott from Hula Moon will be doing it for me today before practice. And then I will clap the bass drum parts.

here's a preview:

illy B drums

just eliminate the orange dot. and that's it. I'm excited.

We continue to record the EP. I'm excited about that too.

I'm just excited. Or is it the three cups of coffee I've had...?

cheers,

they're trying to shut us DOWN...

our third show was totally awes0me. we played heather's housewarming soiree this evening [or last, really. if you wanna be technical. saturday night, just for the record.] we were sounding really great. everyone was owning their instrument. a real energy was circulating between the [6] six of us. third song in, we decided to take a breather. it was hot & everyone needed some air & a refreshment. [water for some, alcohol for others. aaron : "this jell-o™ shot is 70--no--80% vodka."] next thing we know, a police officer walks in, assesses the "situation" & tells us [in no uncertain terms] to cease & desist. we all just stood there, our jaws to the floor. "are you serious?" "is that a costume?" "you're not kidding, are you?" & "are you sure that's a real uniform?" were just a few questions that i'm sure came to mind. i couldn't believe it. we were actually being shut down by the cops. the man was trying to keep us down. hahaha. how cliche is that? but then again, how f*cking PUNK ROCK. i'd say, it was...wait for it...leg-end-ary.

the set list our audience enjoyed :
01. south dakota farm
02. mustard seed boat
03. dresden

i suppose that when you're playing at almost midnight, the night before sunday morning church services, in a neighbourhood primarily populated by--how do i put this lightly--older folk, that it's no real surprise. but the legend will live on. in my head, i pictured us on a rooftop in los angeles, circa 1987. the sounds of "where the streets have no name" trailing off in the distance...

ronnie.

ps : we should've taped the show. note to self, start taping shows.

ahoy there, MATEYS!

this weekend was [2] two days of non-stop recording craziness. many, many hours spent micing, recording, re-recording, brainstorming, sweating, re-re-recording & hi-fiving. lots & lots of work, but i enjoyed every minute of it. "south dakota farm" is close to being finished.

peace,
ronnie

ps : thanks again, nathan d. for the enthusiastic help on the "drunk guy" chorus of "south dakota farm" & the use of your kick arse recording amp. [that thing has amaaaaazing tone] and i must state for the record books, you have a lovely falsetto, sir! ;)

i saw a youtube video this morning. just a scenster party. there was a girl screaming at this guy about the songs he writes. eventually she gets to the point: "are you just gonna write five more songs about how some girl broke your heart?" (insert bratty annoyed scenster girl pouty face). i cringed when i saw the guy turn red and not say another word, just sort of curled up in a drunken fetal position on the kitchen floor. what else would this kid write about? obviously neither one them are socialists or anarchists, poets or painters, so no politics, no metaphors, no imagery... just some kids at a party drinking high life. so what are songs suppose to be about? anything you want of course, why are they about lost loves so often though? my english professor in college would say the creation of art is the act of recapturing the past, or recasting the past even. i tend to agree with this, but why is a song about a lost lover so poignant, while being so cliche, predictable and trite? its the loss we all relate too, and a common experience? i've tried writing love songs about people i know, i usually fail when i attack directly, so metaphor and english degree help a little. i guess loss = love song, you can make lover metaphors out of anything: bicycles, boogers, farting camels in the desert, old t-shirts.

Paris is Burning
it needs a few more verses

you told me you're heart was paris and burning
with one eye sown in a whorl
dancing with pepper labeija in drag
as the fires they set themselves burning

when did it become so important
to dance for the boys on a peg
standing behind a palisade with severed arms
with frayed tapestries in your hands

i never saved you
it wasn't me
it wasn't charles de gaulle
la da da la da da da da da

so you want to know if paris is burning
we just burned your effigy in the street
and your one eye in a whorl has come undone
and the whole ideal is full blood
the cauteries with your name are full rust

paris is burning
paris is burning
paris is burning

1st show. mission accomplished

we played last night at the ole mug in foley. such a good night, the band got to met all the mythical characters of the ole mug: jesse, jonni, robin, the zebra, the elephant, the hyper and caffeinated kids. we played outside under the stars, essentially in the dark, it reminded me of sleep. everyone played really well for a first show, better than expected for a first show. other than the time i cut into ronnie's guitar part on untitled song for a city. bill tucker and friends were really great, they started with a parade, and then rocked. renee, the shape shifting folk singer opened the show and as usual everyone was blown away. jonni rounded the night with some new songs, same old angst :) (ha.)

we have two shows coming up next month, followed by recording at the end of month in athens. also i am trying to finish a few songs so we might have an EP ready by the time we play sluggo's and the blind mule in may. track listing is looking like this:

Paris is Burning
South Dakota Farm
Jeffrey the Alligator
(one more... ronnie is finishing a song for this EP)

you've just been SCHOOLED.

here's an alternate flier that i made for the ole mug show on saturday, 12 april 2008. 7 PM.
gotta love the kids & their outfits. [check out the kid with the bow tie, third row] nostalgic? perhaps. kick arse? definitely! don't worry, there will be NO assigned seating. :)
just be ready to answer with an enthusiastic, "here!" when we call out the cool kid roll. so, be there or be quadrilateral. and who wants to be an L7? ;) ronnie

escapist?

escapist - the avoidance of reality by absorption of the mind in entertainment or in an imaginative situation, activity, etc.

Escapology is the practice of escaping from restraints or other traps. Escapologists (also called escape artists) escape from handcuffs, straitjackets, cages, steel boxes, barrels, bags, burning buildings, fish-tanks and other perils, often in combination.

the rhythm of the beat...

This is what recording looks like. From the corner of the room. Since the band's show yesterday was canceled, put a new date on your calendars. This Saturday. The Ole Mug. In Foley.

It's not that far. And we will be playing with some cool people.

Check the myspace for details.

Hope all is well with you all.

give the drummer some,

1st show rained out

unfortunately our first show was rained out today. we packed all the gear and showed up at the beach by 8am. on time. this seemed like a miracle, there were two locations scouted out for us to play. one: the shell on the beach soaked in rain water, two: the pavillion, beach side, although covered had pools of standing water on stage. after two minutes of deliberation, we packed up and headed by home. i really wanted to play this show but we couldn't, ten minutes after we decided we would not set up and play in either of the locations it started raining. great thanks to the people at captain funs for not coming through with the alternative rain location, not surprising you can't wake these people up in the morning to help out a benefit for the lakeview trauma center, i guess this is a conflict of interest for the captain funs. apologies to anyone that may have shown up, and found sweaty joggers, stale bagels, and no rocketpacks. there are more shows coming up though:

new album this fall, show this weekend p-cola beach shell

we are starting to emerge from the converted garage. somehow still in tact, all our limbs, and most of our wits about us. we have a few shows lined up for april and may and then we are off to athens to record the new album: "escapist vs. exit." here is the track listing:

echo don’t reply
mustard seed boat
dresden
asleep in winter sleeves
apollo 1969: concerning the recently uncovered astronaut love triangle
untitled song for a city in wake of recent flood
devil in my bed
the catamount waltz
the wrestling palm
spanish streets, english invaders

hopefully the album will be released by the fall. we plan on releasing a 7" with the album as well. it will contain one track from the album and two other songs exclusive to the single.

anyhow this weekend we play a benefit (for the rape trauma recovery center) on pensacola beach on saturday morning, 9am. i'll be camping on the beach i believe tonight before the summer takes over too much.
